Three original murder mysteries featuring Bangalore detective Uma Rao
Actor, writer and director Mahesh Dattani is the first playwright in English to be awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award by India’s National Academy of Letters. Included here are all three of his plays featuring Uma Rao – PhD student, daughter-in-law of Bangalore's deputy commissioner of police, and wife of the superintendent. Priyanga Burford (neé Elan), stars as the intrepid sleuth, with full casts including Shiv Grewal, Saeed Jaffrey, Ajay Chhabra, Amerjit Deu and Nitin Chandra Ganatra.
Seven Circles Around the Fire – For her university thesis, Uma is conducting research into the Hijra community (third gender people who are invited to sing, dance and give blessings at weddings and births, but marginalized from mainstream society). But her inquiries uncover a case of corruption, murder and a terrible miscarriage of justice...
The Swami and Winston – When an English aristocrat is found murdered outside a Hindu temple, the only clues are a mischievous dog and a Burberry raincoat. Why was Lady Montefiore visiting an ashram, and who could have wanted to kill her? As Uma delves into her death, she comes into contact with religious fanaticism at its most dangerous...
Uma and the Fairy Queen – Attending a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Uma is embroiled in another murder investigation when the actor playing Oberon, Michael Forsyth, is kidnapped, reappears just in time to go on, and is then found shot dead after the show. Suspicion falls on his wife, but Uma is convinced that the solution to the mystery lies in the play itself...

The Murder of the Maharajah & The Governess ; Two Full-Cast BBC Radio Crime Dramatisations
H. R. F. Keating
- BBC Audio, A Division Of Random House
- 5 Décembre 2024
- 9781529943726
BBC Radio adaptations of two historical crime novels by H. R. F. Keating, plus bonus extract from BookshelfBritish detective writer H. R. F. Keating was best known as the creator of Inspector Ghote of the Mumbai CID. He won two Crime Writers’ Association Gold Daggers, and in 1996 was awarded the Diamond Dagger for lifetime achievement. Included here are dramatisations of two of his most popular murder mysteries, set in 1930s India and Victorian London, plus a short clip from Radio 4’s Bookshelf featuring the award-winning author.
The Murder of the Maharajah – His Highness the Maharajah of Bhopore delights in playing April Fool’s Day tricks on his guests – but the joke turns sour when one of his pranks inadvertently leads to his own murder. Five people apparently had the means and motive to kill him, but as District Superintendent of Police Howard investigates, he realises that the circle of suspects is wider than it seems. Zia Mohyeddin, Renu Setna and Sam Dastor star in this entertaining, Christie-esque drama, adapted from H. R. F. Keating’s Gold Dagger Award-winning novel.
The Governess – When Harriet Unwin is hired as a governess in a wealthy London household, it seems that luck is on her side. That is, until the master of the house, William Thackerton, is found stabbed to death – and all the evidence points to her. Desperate to prove her innocence, she turns detective, uncovering the dark secrets hidden behind the family’s respectable Victorian facade.... Based on H. R. F. Keating’s novel written under the pseudonym Evelyn Hervey, this atmospheric adaptation stars Angela Pleasance and James Bolam.
Bookshelf – Talking to fellow thriller writer Susan Hill, H. R. F. Keating holds up a magnifying glass to the art of crime fiction as he discusses his work and ideas.
Please note: this collection contains language that reflects the attitudes of the era

Sounds Natural ; A BBC Radio 4 nature series
Derek Jones
- BBC Audio, A Division Of Random House
- 19 Décembre 2024
- 9781529904895
Derek Jones meets celebrities with a love of wildlife in these 38 episodes from the classic nature-themed interview showBetween 1970 and 1980, broadcaster Derek Jones invited a host of famous names to chat about their enthusiasm for nature and their encounters with animals. Delving into the BBC Sound Archive to select some of their favourite natural history recordings, they reveal their hitherto unknown passions – from birds and butterflies to the countryside and conservation.
In these specially selected shows, Brian Blessed talks about his fascination with dinosaurs, keeping big cats and overcoming his fear of mountaineering, Bing Crosby tells us about wildfowling, ‘Mister Meadowlark’, naming racehorses and landing salmon; distinguished actress Dame Flora Robson speaks of her years in Hollywood, and her worries that the Los Angeles smog is killing the local flora and fauna; and Goon Show stars Harry Secombe and Spike Milligan let us in on their love for travel and wildlife photography (Harry) and ridiculous animal noises and names (Spike).
Many of Jones’ guests share an interest in twitching, including Eric Morecambe, who relates how his curiosity about birds began when he went fishing with his father in Morecambe Bay, and Bobby Charlton, who developed his bird-spotting hobby while becoming a Manchester United legend. Humphrey Lyteltton reminisces about observing birds on holidays in North Wales, on tour with the band and in his back garden, and Peter Cushing recalls rescuing red shanks and watching oystercatchers and whimbrels on the Kent estuary with his late wife Helen. And, thirty years before Springwatch was a twinkle in Auntie’s eye, Bill Oddie confesses that when he wasn’t busy being a Goodie, he was busy birdwatching.
Whether they’re mad about ornithology or hooked on angling, every one of the celebrities featured has a wealth of compelling personal stories to share, and fascinating insights to impart. Part natural history show, part nostalgic memoir, this wonderfully entertaining series is sure to inspire and delight.

The original ‘Yes Minister’- 32 episodes of the beloved Civil Service sitcom
Featuring the hilarious exploits of the bumbling bureaucrats of the General Assistance Department, the show starred Wilfrid Hyde-White and later Deryck Guyler as the hapless ‘Number One’, with Richard Murdoch as his hare-brained sidekick ‘Number Two’. Together, they muddled their way through Whitehall, creating chaos with their mix-ups, misunderstandings and mismanagement – to the consternation of their boss, the self-serving Permanent Under-Secretary Sir Gregory Pitkin (Roy Dotrice and Ronald Baddiley).
The fantastically funny radio forerunner to 'Yes Minister', The Men from the Ministry ran for 15 years and 13 series between 1962 and 1977, with a final fourteenth series made in 1980 for transmission abroad.
This volume contains 32 specially selected episodes from Series 1-3, in which – among many other misadventures – the panic-stricken pen pushers bungle in Britain’s space race; get bogged down in a building project; tackle traffic trouble and town planning and come face to face with some little green men… Co-starring as their loyal (but incompetent) secretary Mildred Murfin is Norma Ronald, and taking notes for Wilfrid Hyde-White’s ‘Number One’ is April Adams, played by Diana Olsson. Guest stars include John Laurie, Betty Marsden, Joan Sanderson, June Whitfield, Warren Mitchell, Hugh Paddick and Roger Delgado.
NB: Some of the language and humour on this recording reflects the era in which it was first broadcast, and due to the age of the source material, the sound quality may vary. Please note, the final minute of Series 3, Episode 10 (‘Getting the Bird’) is missing.

The complete Series 11-14 of the long-running Civil Service sitcom
The hugely popular precursor to ‘Yes Minister’, The Men from the Ministry had the nation in stitches for 13 series between 1962 and 1977. In 1980, a fourteenth series, comprising remakes of episodes from Series 1-4, was made by the BBC Transcription Service and aired abroad. Some of these remakes are the only surviving versions of their stories, as recordings of series 1-4 have been lost to time.
In this fourth and final volume, comprising all 43 episodes from Series 11-14 of the classic comedy, we take one last ride on the Ministry merry-go-round in the company of bird-brained bureaucrats ‘Number One’ and ‘Number Two’ of the General Assistance Department. As they spread chaos and confusion in the corridors of Whitehall, their manifold misadventures include trying to play Cupid for secretary Mildred, suspecting each other of espionage, plumbing new depths with a naval survey, bungling a British food promotion in New York and blundering through Anglo-Chinese Friendship month...
Deryck Guyler stars as ‘Number One’ and Richard Murdoch as ‘Number Two’, with Norma Ronald as Mildred Murfin and Ronald Baddiley as Sir Gregory Pitkin. Among the guest stars are Pat Coombs, Cass Allen, John Cole, Corinna Marlowe, Hilary Pritchard and Nicolette McKenzie.

Norman Wisdom stars in this light-hearted comedy crime caper
British comedy legend, Norman Wisdom plays small-time crook Norman Hood who’s just been released from prison for burglary. Hoping to make a new life as an honest man, he is entrusted to widow Natalie Matthews (Moira Lister), who offers him a job and accommodation. However, she has an ulterior motive…
Follow the farcical misadventures of Norman, played out with a huge cast of supporting actors as he tries to stick, but mostly fails, to the straight and narrow! Charming, gentle but ever so funny, Robbing Hood is a joy to listen to. Norman’s bicycle turns out to be an unexpected treasure, there’s a trip to the Grand Hotel which triggers a safe cracking incident, and somehow the hapless ex-con becomes mixed up with the mafia – who needs brains when you’ve got bullies?! When Norman tries to earn an honest crust and gets a job in a marmalade factory, it makes for a sticky situation and the psychiatrist next door wants to know why Norman's talking to trees? This is a vintage treasure of a series, not to be missed.
Sir Norman Wisdom was a comedy legend and national treasure whose stellar career on film, stage and television spanned six decades. Charlie Chaplin once referred to him as his ‘favourite clown’. Robbing Hood is a rare radio outing for the actor and a must listen. Moira Lister was a regular cast member on Hancock’s Half Hour, and also appeared in a number of Ealing Studios comedy films.

- 9781529943689
All six episodes of the BBC radio sitcom about a former nun who takes a job with a chaotic catering company
Looking for a sign from God, nun Martina leaves her convent and becomes a temporary chef – only to walk straight into a catering crisis of epic proportions. Valentine’s Viennese Patisserie supplies classy Austrian snacks for corporate events, but now their pastry cook has left, no-one knows how to make any of the delicacies they’re offering. And that’s not their only problem – they’re also being chased by clients, up to their necks in bills and cancellations, and stuck with a clapped-out delivery van that keeps breaking down.
When owner Kingsley does a runner, owing £2500, it seems like the last straw. Left in the lurch, his brother Jimmy has just six weeks to get the money together. Then Martina has a brainwave: why not rename the company Bangers and Mash, and serve up sausages and pies instead of patisserie? Helped by kitchen assistant Juan Jose, she and Jimmy are soon producing food that wows even the pickiest customers – but just as they’re turning things around, the toffee tin containing half the company’s profits goes missing. With only three days to go till they have to pay up, it’ll take a miracle to save their bacon…
Scripted by award-winning dramatist Katie Hims (Home Front, 24 Kildare Road), this flavourful comedy drama stars Catherine Harvey as Martina, with Mark Straker as Kingsley, Gerard McDermott as Jimmy and Roger May as Juan Jose.

Sir Lenny Henry’s Journey to Othello ; A BBC Radio Collection
Lenny Henry
- BBC Audio, A Division Of Random House
- 19 Décembre 2024
- 9781529948561
Three BBC Radio programmes charting Sir Lenny Henry’s transformation from comic actor to tragic hero – including the complete full-cast production of Shakespeare’s OthelloLenny Henry used to hate Shakespeare. For over 35 years he avoided anything to do with the Bard – until, in 2006, he decided to find out just what the rest of the world saw in him. In this enthralling collection, we hear how Lenny’s late-flowering passion for the legendary playwright’s works set him on the path that led to his sell-out stage debut as Othello. Bringing together this behind-the-scenes journey with the final result, this collection culminates in Lenny’s standout performance in a dynamic full-cast radio production of Othello. Lenny and Will sees him going ‘in search of the magic of Shakespeare in performance’, starting at the recreated Globe Theatre. Talking to leading actors and directors including Adrian Lester, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Peter Hall, Trevor Nunn, Dominic Dromgoole and Patsy Rodenburg, he wonders why we put Shakespeare on a pedestal, and confesses to a newfound enthusiasm for his classic dramas. And, after reciting Othello’s last speech to Northern Broadside’s Barrie Rutter, he begins to wonder if he could take on the role for real...Lenny Henry Plays Othello takes up the story where Lenny and Will left off, continuing Lenny’s personal odyssey. Having been offered the chance of a lifetime by Barrie Rutter, he sets out on a long road of preparation. Listening to his audio diary, we hear his hopes and fears – and eavesdrop on everything from coaching sessions to boot fittings. From first rehearsals to curtain up, we follow his remarkable metamorphosis into Shakespeare’s betrayed Moorish general. Finally, in Lenny Henry in Othello, we hear Lenny’s acclaimed performance as the noble African commander whose mind is poisoned by the hate-filled Iago: a stunning achievement that won him the Evening Standard’s Outstanding Newcomer Award. Featuring the cast of the acclaimed West End production and with original music from Conrad Nelson, who also plays Iago, this mesmerising tale of love, jealousy, racism and desire will grip you from start to tragic finish. A brilliant and bonkers comedy about finding love at the petrol pumps
Alex is desperate to find someone to share his life with, but too scared to do anything about it. A film obsessive, he works the night shift at an isolated petrol station on the outskirts of a two-bit town. Awkward, and with no real friends to speak of, he confides in his only ‘colleague’ - a smiley-faced vacuum cleaner named Keith, whose voice only Alex can hear.
Ella is a cycling-mad woman of action, prepared for anything and curious about everything. One stormy night, by chance, their lives intersect. These two lonely souls are made for each other, even if they don't know it.
Listen and fall in love with the pair as their story unfolds. A wonderful, heart-warming and unconventional love story with a touch of the absurd and plenty of laughs. Influenced heavily by the best movie genres film-nerd Alex can think of, his nights take some usual twists and turns. Episodes range from Westerns where the stake are high and loners drift like tumbleweed, to Zombie Horror with infected hordes and red rain, Sci-Fi evil twins and ray guys and all out Action when the petrol station is taken over and the duo must decide who is the most ‘Van Damme’ –making this a hilarious, compelling and uplifting listen.
Starring Will Merrick (Skins), Patricia Allison (Sex Education) and Kenneth Collard (Cuckoo, Zapped).
The Cullen Brothers (Oliver and Jake) are award winning directors, writers and producers from Bristol. The pair blend their love of cinema with their distinctive, absurd and irreverent comedic style. The Attendant radio series is based on their internationally acclaimed short film of the same name starring Robert James-Collier (Downton Abbey) and Isy Suttie (Peep Show).

- BBC Audio, A Division Of Random House
- 14 Novembre 2024
- 9781529938876
Both series of the engaging romantic comedy set in a 1960s bedsit, inspired by Katharine Whitehorn's cookery classic
It’s 1964, and 22-year-old Trisha moves into a West Hampstead bedsitter to escape her controlling suburban parents and her boring fiancé, Keith. She’s determined to make it as a swinging, get-ahead girl-about-town, but finds herself struggling with homesickness, loneliness and the challenges of cooking a decent meal on a single gas ring.
Then she rescues a grotty wardrobe from her landlady’s attic, and it yields a surprising treasure – a copy of Cooking in a Bedsitter, which becomes her bible. Soon, she’s rustling up tasty treats for dinner parties and double dates – aided by Deepak, the dishy young medical student from across the landing.
He introduces her to the delights of aloo pakora, she surprises him with a picnic at the seaside – but when their burgeoning relationship is snuffed out by Trisha’s parents, she moves on, to a different bedsit and a new man. She’s definitely over Deepak: or is she? If she wants him back, she’ll have to move fast – before he heads out of her life forever...
Written by Sue Teddern (soloparentpals.com), and interspersed with recipes and extracts from Katharine Whitehorn’s original book, this appetising romcom stars Beattie Edmondson and Nikesh Patel.

The Exploits of Sir Ralph Stanza ; A BBC Radio Comedy Collection
James Quinn
- BBC Audio, A Division Of Random House
- 14 Novembre 2024
- 9781529943054
Two sitcom gems from the early 2000s featuring the achingly hip poet Sir Ralph Stanza, written by and starring James QuinnSir Ralph Stanza, a hip London poet, is determined to communicate the people's hopes and fears through his verse. Whether they like it or not…
Sir Ralph Stanza’s Letter from Salford follows the exploits of the distinguished-but-hip London poet Sir Ralph Stanza as he settles into his new role as the poet-in-residence for Salford. This is all thanks to a specially-funded scheme displaying great cultural magnanimity towards the good people of the north of England. As he straddles the streets of Orsdall and Weaste, in his panama hat, blazer and silk scarf, Sir Ralph's goal is to blend in with the locals and express their anger through his verse. He seeks his muse in a chip shop, has run-ins with ‘the man’ and what says ‘artistic climax’ more than bringing quiche to the Quays…?
In The Jail Diaries of Sir Ralph Stanza our hero poet navigates his new role and incarcerated reality as poet-in-residence at a maximum security prison. Albie Sachs, Nelson Mandela, Jeffrey Archer... The literary penal tradition is an honourable one. It finally reaches its pinnacle with Sir Ralph Stanza, the poet dedicated to bringing culture to the masses, and gently explaining it to them. Sir Ralph shocks the prison authorities by doing a rap double act with inmate Jermaine leading to some far reaching and unexpected consequences…
These comedy series about a poet with a passion feature a special guest appearance from none other than (actual) poet laureate, Carol Ann Duffy. A perfect listen for anyone looking for the lighter side of life, culture and laughter.

A hilarious dark comedy about a football-crazy priest, starring BAFTA winner Brenda BlethynThe late Gregory Patterson was a stalwart of the Roman Catholic Parishioners. With his passing, how will Mrs Patterson cope with her headstrong daughter, Barbara? And can young Robert step into his father’s shoes and face up to new responsibilities? Not when Barbara is determined to ruin the evening… As the Patterson family spiral out of control, with Barbara succumbing to temptation in the shape of biker Andy, Robert attending a rival school and a bereft Mrs Patterson hoping a small dog will fill the hole in her heart left by her husband’s death, Father Benedict has more pressing concerns - the Frewitt Cup final is weeks away and the team must win at all cost. This charming and darkly funny comedy about faith, families and football will have you cheering in delight from the pews to the terraces. All 25 episodes of the award-winning satirical news show from 2024
One of BBC Radio 4’s flagship topical comedies, The News Quiz has been satirising the living daylights out of current events for 47 years. These three series see host Andy Zaltzman skewering the news and passing it to the panellists to be grilled and served up with comic seasoning.
Opening with a ‘Best of 2023’ compilation episode, looking back on some of the best (and worst) bits of the previous 365 days, the show goes on to tackle the big topics at home and abroad in 2024. The subjects explored include broken geopolitical New Year’s resolutions, BBC bias, the battle for the White House, Labour’s ‘Brat Summer’, King Charles’ wild adventures in the South Pacific, the coming of Earth’s new moon (‘All hail Moon 2!) plus a post-General Election special; and two shows in which Lucy Portman and Ian Smith step in as guest hosts in Andy Zaltzman’s absence.
Diving headlong into the headlines are comedians and commentators from across the political spectrum, among them Marie Le Conte, Alasdair Beckett-King, Shaparak Khorsandi, Hugo Rifkind, Athena Kugblenu, Stuart Mitchell, Robin Morgan, Cindy Yu, Andrew Maxwell, Tadiwa Mahlunge and Aditi Mittal.

It's ten years since Harry Sullivan left UNIT and gave up his travels in the TARDIS with the Doctor and Sarah Jane.
Since then he has been engaged in top secret work, developing antidotes to nerve toxins. But when he is transferred to Yarra in the Hebrides to work on weapons research, he has severe misgivings. For one thing, it goes against much of what he believes in. For another, someone is out to kill Harry Sullivan.

Olga Koch explores the world via computer science in this STEM stand-up show
Comedian Olga Koch has a masters degree in the social science of the Internet and can turn almost any file into a PDF. In these three series, she looks at life through the eyes of a computer scientist, taking the universal truths you hold dear and tearing them to shreds using logic.
With the help of her sassy digital assistant ALGO (played by Sindhu Vee, Tia Kofi and Rajiv Karia), she uses stand-up and storytelling to unpack concepts such as Nationality, Beauty, Health, Privacy, Fun, Intelligence, Friendship and Family. She talks us through what you need to know to become a British citizen (including what time the pubs open, and every single line-up of the Sugababes since 2007); uses recursion and Harry Styles to examine what being beautiful means; goes on a mission to get healthy, and wonders if encryption really works and why no one can set a good password.
What are the fundamentals of fun? What can Colonel Sanders and the Creation Museum tell us about intelligence? Can you be best friends with a bot – or a politician? And can your family be more than just your random relations? These questions, and many more, are tackled by Olga, as she and ALGO take a hilarious journey through the inherent absurdities of our modern world.

Pilgrim walks again between the worlds of magick and of men…
A two-part special from the fantastical drama series set in a world almost, but not quite, like our own.
Each year at Belle Meadow Fayre, the Greyfolk meet to celebrate the burial of John Barleycorn, a ritual to mark autumn's end. But this year there’s a problem: Old Johnny John John has gone missing. Autumn shows no sign of abating and without the sacred ceremony at Belle Meadow, winter will not come. The Greyfolk are angry. It's down to Pilgrim to find Old Johnny John John and face down his kidnapper, the rogue faerie Kara.
Paul Hilton stars as Pilgrim, cursed with immortality by the King of the Greyfolk and forever forced to walk between the human world and the world of Faerie in a never-ending quest to preserve the uneasy balance between the two.
Thrilling, dark and contemporary, this award-winning drama weaves together ancient myths, magic and a contemporary realism that is haunted by the folktales of the British Isles.
